How a Flow Hive Actually Works

The video everyone has seen shows a hand turning a key and honey running down a tube into a jar, with the bees apparently unbothered. It looks like a trick. The most common question that follows is a fair one: where exactly does the honey come from, and what happens inside the comb at the moment the key turns?

The mechanism is simpler than the video makes it look, and understanding it also explains the limits. Once you can picture what a Flow frame does internally, you can tell which parts of beekeeping it replaces and which parts it leaves exactly where they were.

The Frame Is the Whole Invention

A Flow frame is not a container that bees fill like a jug. It is a grid of food grade plastic cells, molded so that each cell is almost complete before the colony ever sees it. The bees add wax to finish the cell walls, fill them with nectar, ripen it into honey and cap the face with wax exactly as they would on ordinary comb.

What Happens When You Turn the Key

The key is a long tool that slots into an opening at the top of the frame. Turning it a quarter turn shifts the cell halves and splits every cell in that frame at once. Honey inside the comb falls into the channels, runs down to a closed trough along the bottom bar, and exits through a spout you have already fitted with a tube.

The wax cappings on the outer face stay intact through all of this, which is why bees standing on the comb carry on working. After the frame has drained, you turn the key back, the cells close into their original shape, and the colony chews away the disturbed wax and starts refilling.


The Harvest Sequence Step by Step

Why the Honey Does Not Leak the Rest of the Time

When the cells are in their closed position, the two halves interlock and the bees seal any remaining gaps with wax and propolis, the sticky resin they use as caulk. The result behaves like ordinary comb: honey stays put, and the trough at the bottom of the frame stays closed off from the cells above it.

That seal is also why a new Flow super sometimes takes a while to get going. A colony often needs to wax over the plastic surface before it treats the frames as home, and many keepers brush a thin coat of wax on to speed that up. A frame that stays empty for weeks is usually a colony strength or forage issue rather than a fault.


What the Mechanism Does Not Do

The Flow frame changes one afternoon a year. It does not inspect the brood nest, it does not count mites, it does not notice swarm cells and it does not tell you the colony is running out of stores in late winter. Everything under the queen excluder is ordinary beekeeping on ordinary equipment.

It also does not replace the judgement call about ripeness. Honey drained too early carries too much water and will not keep. How It Compares With Spinning Frames

A conventional harvest removes the frames, uncaps them, spins them in a drum and returns the empty comb to the bees. It handles any standard frame, scales to many hives, and lets you inspect every frame while you work. It also takes a full sticky day and needs equipment and space.

Does splitting the cells hurt the bees? The cells split inside the comb, behind the wax caps, and bees on the comb surface generally carry on working. Bees inside a cell at the moment of the turn are a possibility, which is why keepers turn frames in sections and drain slowly.

Is Flow honey raw? It comes straight out of the comb without heating or filtering, so it is as unprocessed as extracted honey that has only been strained. Ripeness still matters, and that comes from harvesting capped frames.

Do Flow frames need cleaning? Yes. Frames accumulate wax, propolis and crystallized honey, and most keepers clean them at the end of the season before storing them. They are dismantleable for that reason.

Can honey crystallize inside the frame? It can, particularly with forage that granulates quickly, and crystallized cells will not drain. That is one reason keepers harvest through the season rather than leaving frames full for months.
