Two numbers cover almost everything a backyard beekeeper needs to know about syrup: one to one and two to one. The first is thin, the second is thick, and the choice between them is really a choice about what you want the colony to do with it. Thin syrup says spring is here and there is nectar coming; thick syrup says store this away.
Beyond the ratio, the questions that actually cause trouble are which sugar to use, whether to measure by weight or by volume, how hot the water should be, and when feeding is the wrong answer entirely. This guide covers all of them, and points to the seasons where syrup stops being useful at all.

What the Two Ratios Actually Mean
A one to one syrup is equal parts sugar and water; a two to one syrup is twice as much sugar as water. Everything else about them follows from that. Thin syrup is closer to nectar in concentration, so the colony treats it like a flow and responds by drawing comb and expanding the brood nest. Thick syrup has far less water to drive off, so it goes into cells and gets capped.
The seasons follow the same logic. Spring is when you want building, fall is when you want storing, and that is the whole reason two ratios exist rather than one.
One to One: Spring and Buildup
Thin syrup is what you give a package or a nuc that has foundation to draw, and what some keepers use in early spring to nudge a colony into brood rearing before natural forage arrives. Wax production and brood rearing both cost energy, and a steady supply of thin syrup covers that cost when the weather is still unreliable.
The risk is doing it too early or too enthusiastically. A colony stimulated into raising a lot of brood before the local flow arrives has more mouths and no forage, and in a cold snap that can go badly. Local timing is genuinely local, so lean on a county association or a university extension service rather than a national calendar.
Two to One: Fall and Building Stores
Thick syrup is fall feeding. The goal is not to stimulate anything, it is to top up the pantry before winter, and the less water in the syrup the less work the colony has to do curing it and the less humidity ends up in the hive. Colonies take thick syrup readily when the nights are still mild enough for them to process it.

By Weight or By Volume?
Both are in common use, and the difference matters less than the internet suggests. Measuring by weight is more precise and is what most published guidance uses; measuring by volume is quicker and gets close enough for a backyard colony that is going to process the syrup anyway.
What matters more is consistency. Pick one method, use it for both ratios, and you will learn what your bees do with each. If you are following a written recipe from an extension service, use whichever method that recipe specifies rather than converting on the fly.
Which Sugar, and Which Ones to Avoid
Plain white granulated cane or beet sugar is the standard. It dissolves cleanly, it is close to pure sucrose, and it leaves very little residue for the colony to deal with. That is the entire specification, and paying more for a fancier sugar buys nothing.
Avoid brown sugar, raw and unrefined sugars, molasses, powdered sugar with cornstarch in it and any artificial sweetener. These contain solids and compounds that bees do not handle well and that can accumulate in the gut over a winter with no cleansing flights. Honey from any outside source is a separate and more serious no, because it can carry disease spores between apiaries.
Mixing It Without Ruining It
Heat the water, take it off the burner, then stir the sugar in until it goes clear. Hot water dissolves sugar quickly and the syrup can be poured once it has cooled to roughly hive temperature. Thick fall syrup needs hotter water and more stirring than thin spring syrup, simply because there is more sugar to dissolve.
Do not boil the syrup and do not let sugar scorch on the bottom of the pan. Extension guidance is consistent on this point: overheated sugar syrup can develop compounds that are harmful to bees, and there is no upside to pushing the temperature. If it caramelizes or darkens, start again.

Storage, Mold and Fermentation
Syrup is sugar water and it spoils. Mixed syrup keeps for a while in a cool dark place and much less time in a warm shed, and syrup left on a hive in summer heat ferments and gets refused. Mix quantities you will use within a reasonable window rather than making a month of it at once.
If a feeder comes off with a film on the surface or a sour smell, dump it, wash the feeder and start fresh rather than topping up over old syrup. Some keepers add commercial feed supplements to slow spoilage; whatever the manufacturer claims for those products belongs on their label, not in our guidance.
When Not to Feed at All
Do not feed during a strong nectar flow. The colony has better food available and syrup only competes for cell space. More importantly, never feed with honey supers on if you plan to harvest that honey, because syrup stored in a super ends up in the jar and that is not honey any more.
Feeding also does not solve every problem it gets used for. A colony that is failing for another reason, whether that is a mite load, a lost queen or disease, will not be fixed by syrup. Diagnose first, and for reportable diseases the contact is your state apiarist rather than a feeding regime.
