The hive stand is the piece of equipment people think about last and regret first. It is not glamorous, it does not appear in any photograph anyone shares, and it decides how your back feels after an inspection, whether ants get into your supers, and whether the bottom board is still sound in five years.

It also has to be right before the bees arrive, because a stand is close to impossible to change once a colony is living on it. A few minutes of thought about height, level and what the legs are standing in will save you a lot of quiet swearing later.

Why the Hive Needs to Be Off the Ground

A hive sitting directly on soil rots from the bottom board upward, wicks damp into the brood nest, and gives ants, skunks and mice a direct route to the entrance. Lifting the hive breaks all of those chains at once, improves airflow underneath and keeps the entrance clear of grass and snow.

Height also protects your back. Every box you take off during an inspection has to be lifted from the top of the stack and set down somewhere, and the taller the stand, the shorter that lift is at the moment the box is heaviest. That is the single practical reason most keepers regret building low.


Getting the Height Right

The comfortable answer is a stand that puts the top of your brood box somewhere around hip height, so you are lifting boxes at waist level rather than bending to floor level. Try it before you commit: stack an empty box on your proposed stand and mime taking the top one off.

There is a limit, though. A tall stand plus two brood boxes plus three supers puts the top box above shoulder height in a good year, and a stack that tall on narrow legs is unstable. Many backyard keepers settle a little lower than they first want and use a hive lift or a second pair of hands during the honey flow instead.


Level Matters More Than It Sounds

Side to side, the hive should be level. Bees build comb by gravity, and a hive that leans sideways gets comb that leans with it, drifting off the frame line and welding itself to neighbors. That is the origin of a lot of cross comb that gets blamed on the frames.

Front to back, the hive should tip very slightly forward. That small slope lets rain that blows into the entrance run back out instead of pooling on the bottom board, and it helps the bees clear debris. Check both directions with a spirit level when you set the stand, then check again after the first winter, since ground moves.

There is no standard stand, and that is fine. What matters is that it holds a lot of weight without sinking, does not rock, and lets you protect the legs. The four options below cover almost every backyard apiary you will see.

Keeping Ants Out

Ants are a stand problem, not a hive problem, because they get in by walking up the legs. The classic fix is a cup of oil or water under each foot so the legs stand in a moat the ants cannot cross. It works well as long as nothing else bridges the gap.

That bridge is where most people fail. A blade of grass touching the box, a branch resting on the lid, a strap trailing to the ground, or a weed growing through the stand all give ants a bypass. Keep a clear gap of bare ground or gravel around the stand, and check for bridges whenever you inspect.


Mice, Skunks and Weather

Height helps against skunks, which scratch at low entrances in the evening and eat the guard bees that come out. A stand that puts the entrance above comfortable scratching height makes the hive much less attractive, and keepers with persistent skunk visits often go higher still.

Where the Stand Goes
